Peregrines at Torrey Pines State Beach : June 1-5, 2016

June 1, 2016

I avoided Torrey Pines over the Memorial Day weekend. Two juveniles fledged during that time. One was found with a hurt leg Monday (30th) AM on the beach below the nest, and rescued by Project Wildlife. The good action was in progress as I arrived, with the parents trolling the juveniles with food. No other feeding was evident before I left around 6:30.

Dad might have a talon stuck in the food - he's not letting go, and they're falling...

pIMG_1082.JPG

The juvenile finally disengages as they fall.

Another try... This successful food exchange sequence was right overhead!

(3:09p) Mom has food now. She flew around trying to get the juveniles to chase but they must all have been full.

An overcast afternoon with poor lighting conditions. A little dogfighting, then relatively quiet. No feeding activity, but an adult looked to be heading out over the lagoon at 7p.

(2:53p) The runt still hasn't fledged.

Another overcast afternoon. The sun tried to peek through a few holes, but only briefly. Other photographers reported the runt fledged in the morning.

The morning started foggy and it lifted a little, but the sun didn't make it out while I was there. There were some early scuffles, but I wound up watching the runt while the others appeared to be doing most of the dogfighting.

(7:23a) Looks a little wet.
